The autotransformer reduced voltage starting cabinet reduces the voltage applied to the motor stator through the autotransformer, thereby reducing the starting current. When the motor starts, the stator winding is connected to the secondary side of the autotransformer, which is in reduced voltage starting state. After the start is completed, the autotransformer is disconnected, the stator winding is connected to rated voltage, and the motor operates at full voltage. Autotransformer reduced voltage starting is one of the starting methods for cage induction motors (also known as asynchronous motors). It has the advantages of compact circuit structure, no limitation by the motor winding connection method, and can select different transformer voltage taps according to the allowable starting current and required starting torque, so it is suitable for motors with larger capacity.

  • Press the start button SB2, the coil of time relay KT is energized, the normally open contact of the time relay closes, the time relay starts timing, and at the same time, the coils of KM3 and KM2 are energized and start working, which is the autotransformer reduced voltage starting state. When the timing of the time relay is completed, the delayed opening contact opens, the coils of KM3 and KM2 lose power and stop working, while the normally closed contact closes, the delayed closing contact of the time relay closes, the coil of KM1 is energized, the normally open contact closes, and KM1 starts working. At this point, the autotransformer reduced voltage starting is completed.
  • Autotransformer reduced voltage starting is often used to start large-capacity three-phase AC motors. The autotransformer is equipped with taps of 65% and 80% of the line voltage, and the starting current of the motor is 42% and 64% of the full voltage starting current respectively. The starting current and starting torque of the motor decrease proportionally to the square of its terminal voltage. With the same starting current, the motor can obtain greater starting torque.
